Nimpo Lake, BC . . . AKA "the Floatplane Capital o
A nice SCub landed @ the dock today, so naturally I went down to greet him & initiate some BS. His buddy was refuelling his Citabria @ the Anahim strip & was coming in to our dirt strip. Soon we saw him circle & check out our neighborhood so we moseyed up to get the truck to pick him up.
When we get up the hill, there's no plane on the strip. Oh-Oh, there's something red/white in the rhubarb beside the (closed) X-strip. The Doc in the truck w/me was the first to say "oh shat" as his daughter was aboard. Another neighbor was already there, helping them into his truck, after he'd put out the fire in the carb. Whew. They were both OK, just bashed & shaken. Fuel dripping from the cap vents. I put a collector bucket under one, couldn't get to the other.
He said he thought the big white X's were end of runway markers. Said his left foot came off the brake pedal & he swerved to the right, caught the edge of the bank & flipped (gently) onto it's back.
After we got them back to the house & cleaned up, settled down, etc, the Doc pronounced them both OK. Called the NTSB (?) & reported the minor incident, and because there were no injuries or liability issues, they requested a fax/email account of what happened & that will be it!! Whew, we envisioned 1.5 miles of paperwork in triplicate.
Another bud flew in (185 on floats) and took 'em back home. Cub followed on his own. Tomorrow to get it right-side up & dismantled & onto a truck. This guy was a good pilot (they said) but was in trouble in a heartbeat. Y'all be careful out there.
Pix soon in my album thingie.
