My gill battery is on it's way out. It's 4 years old. A week goes by and it hardly turns the engine over. If I charge the battery for an hour it acts normal. I have purchased a PC680 odessey and I would like to install it under the front seat. It's great, shaving some weight by replacing the heavy gill but........if I install the odessey in the original battery box behind the back seat......what do I lose in weight loss for the extra lenght in battery cables that you would normally shorten when you intall the battery under the seat? Does the battery under the seat require you to remove the front seat springs? Thanks Mark

Hey Teeweed,

Does the battery under the seat require you to remove the front seat springs?
Yes, the springs are replaced with a lid similar to the rear seat when you have the underseat storage. Glad I have the Oregon cushion :D
Not sure on weight of cables or impact to W&B. Some like the battery back for balance.

Dan's Aircraft underseat battery conversion requires you to remove the seat springs and replace with a metal lid. Atlee Dodge's conversion does not use a lid and retains the original seat springs.

Teeweed,

The other thing to consider, if you're dealing with a certified airplane is an STC. You will probably have a hard time getting approval on a battery location that hasn't already been approved.

If you're experimental, no sweat.

My CG has changed somewhat with the weight of the 31's and safety cables soon to be installed. My weight 270... more than the average pilot so I probably have enough forward weight. The PC 680 will go in the back. I have some tie down augers that will make up the weight saved on the battery. Thanks Mark

Does the underseat battery work with a lowered front seat? Either Dan's or Atlee's?

What is the required clearance?

Thanks. cubscout

I have seen several people talk about getting approvals of putting the 680 in the original location. Personally, I don't think it is worth the hassle of standing on your head to move it under the front seat in an airplane that is covered. Talk to your IA and get their opinion.

Depends on what your doing with the plane. If your mostly hauling heavy loads move it forward but if your usually flying around by yourself leave it in back it will help keep the tail down when you on the brakes hard.
