Really rubbed me when I read this. My wife is from Jacksboro and I used to fly in there weekly. Was a lot of fun had there when the sea plane operation was going on. People from as far away as AK getting ratings. Here is the letter I wrote to the editor:

Having frequented the Jacksboro Municipal Airport on a weekly basis in
recent years I read with interest your recent article on the
demolition of the sea plane ramp at the airport. I can remember when
Mr. Bernstein operated a sea plane school there and all the activity
each weekend. The airport was well kept and there were people from as
far away as Alaska staying in Jacksboro while they obtained their sea
plane rating. My recent visits to the Jacksboro Airport were quite the
opposite. Uncut grass, broken pay phone and inoperative fuel pump
greet visitors to your local airport.

I also find attorney Bonnie Goldstein's concerns about Homeland
Security issues and access to international waterways unfounded due to
the location and size of the lake. The comment about aircraft
"buzzing" the ballfield was interesting since the ball fields are on
the approach path to runway 17.

I think Jacksboro has a great asset in their airport and it's
proximity to the water and the city. I hope some of the powers that be
will realize it's benefits to the local economy.

Here is a picture of the airport. Makes for great float operations.

Sorry to hear about the ramp removal. Most of the people in that article probably haven't been in a plane smaller than a 737 and don't know anything about float flying. It is just another good example of why we float plane pilots and land plane pilots need to raise a little hell when the "powers that be" start talking about shutting out the small plane use. We are experiencing the same thing here in Montana on about 150 miles of the Missouri.

Howdy Steve P. This is hilarious. Sorry. Not the destruction of the
seaplane ramp but the ridiculous reasons cited by the city council
woman, Goldstein, in her letter of concerns to the FAA.

"The events of Sept. 11, 2001, fundamentally and irrevocably changed
the way governmental entities protect their citizenry, including, but not
limited to, increased security requirements at municipal air facilities,”
wrote Goldstein "

Can you imagine the terrorist landing in the lake and taking over the
airport by way of the seaplane ramp?

"Citizens of Jacksboro. We are real terrorists and have taken over
your airport by sneaking up the seaplane ramp! We will not release our
control until the City Council meets our demand of 6 pounds of smoked
baby-back ribs (beef - not pork) with two sides of beans and coleslaw.
Also extra sauce and eight glasses of sweet tea with lots of lemon.
We caution you that we are all qualified to fly float planes and if
our demands are not met we fly low over your ball field making plenty
noises. You have 2 hours. We are not the people who are kidding."

 Joe you crack me up. Want to go to the city council meeting with me? The city ousted the old council and the city manager so maybe something good will happen. Somebody called the city manager to have a dead cat picked up out of the road in front of his house. The city manager gave him a hard time and told him to deal with it. When the city manager got home that night he had a dead cat on his front step.
