View Full Version : Cub Flyer Beer Poll

It's 9 degrees outside my house. Heidi the German Shepherd ate a huge bowl of chili that was on the counter, and I can't open the windows.
So,,, I was thinking about beer...
I may burn car gas in my Cub to save money from time to time,,,But I can't stand cheap beer.
My dog even prefers premium beer.
Now my lovely bride Iron Inge, who is a real Bavarian, will drink whatever cheap beer is on sale. YUCK.....
So how does this run with my brother and sister Cubites?
I may stock the guest cabin, so I can visit....
I like Alaska Pale Ale, Alaska Amber, and Pacifico if I have to drink Mexican beer.

Dos Equis (XX) Amber @ 55 degrees F. Closet thing that you'll find to good German beer in the states.

Alex:
Your poll doesn't cover enough choices.
I *drink* almost any beer. I only *buy* decent beer. My favorite is Paulaner Hefe-Weizen, mmmm good! Imported from Munich.
Micro beers tend to be my second choice, until they get too 'trendy'. Sam Adams used to be OK, as did Anchor and Sierra Nevada. Now they're just beer to me.
I do sometimes buy Leinenkugels, a small-scale Wisconsin brew. They have something like 72 employees. Their Bock is quite good but infrequently available. Summit Ale, from Saint Paul, Minnesota is another good small-market beer. The Extra Pale Ale is yummy.

Jon,
I heard a little of the history of this brewery. It was actually started by German immigrants. Don't confuse this stuff with Carona or Carte Blanca. They're brewed with donkey p***! Give it a try......you'll like it!

Ron,
You're right on the money about Dos Equis and it's history. Before allergies started killing me, I used to home-brew / drink a few brews from time to time. Here's a little history on Dos Equis borrowd from another site:
Dos Equis Amber is a Vienna-style lager brewed by Cerveceria Cuahtemoc Moctezuma in Veracruz Mexico. A Vienna-style lager from Mexico you say? Actually yes. In 1897, Wilhelm Hasse, a German immigrant, established Dos Equis lagers in Mexico in honor of the approaching twentieth century. As expected, Dos Equis Amber has a mild, yet wonderful nose of sweet malt topped by a thin, lacy off-white head. A clear amber color body with copper highlights sits nicely in the lager glass. The lager has a simple yet elegant flavor profile of caramel and fresh roasted malt enhanced by pinpricks of mild hops bitterness at the finish. Although it is thinner than some Vienna-style lagers, it still maintains a likable smooth, crisp liquid mouthfeel.

Not bad choices, especially the Pacifico. However, if at all possible my choice would be Carib (made in Trinidad). GOOD stuff!! Wish I could figure out a way to get some up here to Wisconsin (any ideas would be appreciated).

These days if I'm drinking beer its...
Deschutes Black Butte Porter (http://www.deschutesbrewery.com/BrewPub/OnTap/5832.aspx). or
Deschutes Obsidian Stout (http://www.deschutesbrewery.com/BrewPub/OnTap/5828.aspx), or
Snoqualmie Falls Brewery Steamtrain Porter (http://www.fallsbrew.com/beer.html), or
Big Sky Brewing Company Moose Drool (http://www.bigskybrew.com/index.php/fuseaction/home.beers).
But you guys should not overlook the alternative barley beverage. Here's the Perfect Six Pack of Classic Single Malts (http://www.queenannewine.com/classicmalts.html)
Yuengling Lager, good stuff.

If I can't pronounce the name of a beer, I won't drink it.
Coors Lite for me, thanks.
In Africa, Castles and Tafel are pretty good.

I tried to add more choices but it only printed a couple. I always have problems with the poll area of this web site.
CARIB ! I was drinking that on Saint Vincent back in 1978 when they got their independence from England. Prince Chuck the wing-nut was there on board HMS Jupiter. It was pretty cheap to buy.
There was some local stuff in Belgium that was really great.
That Tyrolian Italian beer is better than I thought it would be.
My dad is into Anchor Steam beer.

Tecate.....30 years ago, I was on a Harley Sportster coming up out of Mexico towards Gila Bend at 10:30 at night and it was still 110 degrees. I pulled up behind a pickup full of Compadres and one pulled a Tecate out of a ice cooler and handed it to me as I went by.
I have drank Tecate since and wasn't similarly impressed but at the time that was the best beer I have ever tasted...

Yeap, flew into Bahrain a couple of times from another sandy place.
We caught a cab to the Gulf Hotel (which has a water fall down the middle of it inside.)
It was over 120 outside, damp and cool inside. Then a cute Korean chick, with legs up to here, brought over some beer in a frosted glass.
I do not even know what type of beer it was... But it sure welded itself into my memory..

I haven't met a beer I really didn't like yet, but beers of choice would include, Eichbaum Export :drinking: (that's the good stuff I loved in Germany) Grolsh, Becks, Henry's Ale, Coors light, and if things get really desperate Keystone because what could be better than crappy bottled beer taste in a can(?).

In this part of the world it is Leines but I grew up in Rolling Rock country. There are a bunch of cops who hang out at our hangar and they will only drink Budweiser so I drink a lot of that too or whatever friends leave behind. A lot of guys rebuild stuff in our hangar over the winter. The rent is usually paid in beer.

In this part of the world it is Leines.
I was stationed at Wold Chaimberland ANG Base in 1970. The day my Flight Engineer class graduated, we toured 4 breweries in Mpls/St. Paul. I remember Hamms and Grain Belt, because they were the first two. The rest of the day is a little fuzzy. There were lots of neat localized breweries around town then.

How did that old song go? "On tap, in the can, or in the bottle, Bartender bring me some beer"
Leinenkugels I still remember how to spell it.
I tell people that I met my wife when she was working at a strip bar.. Really, I met her walking through Sam's Club and she was wearing a UW Eau Claire sweatshirt. I kept calling her but she wouldn't go out with me.
( Must have heard the rumors) As a last ditch effort I flew back to Wisconsin and picked up a case of Leinenkugels and Point beer and had them delivered to her office. It worked. We decorate our Christmas tree with Leinenkugel and Point cans (empty)

Alex,
You have a great brewery just minutes from your front door. The Homer Brewery has excellent beer. My favorite is the Red Knot Scottish Ale. Their China Poot Ale is also very good, similar to a Guiness. When I get my Champ up and flying I will have to make a trip down on a beer run.

I have consumed all of their beers. While I may have put them in a poem
(Yellow Cub versus the Volcano) I personally do not like their beer.
Any of it.
My dad is a big "Red Knot" fan as is my oldest son. When he is not busy busting my truck or finding socially unacceptable women on the internet. Son that is. Academy Officer... go figure.
The youngest Son (helo type wrench, in Iraq right now) would drink swamp water if you told him that some Dos Equis had once been spilled there. He picks better gals too.

Alex:
My younger son is headed for Iraq in a few weeks. He buys and drinks Bud Light. I've tried hard to educate him but my fatherly advice falls on deaf ears. It probably started when he was a starving college student. I s'pose he's in for a long dry spell in a Muslim country, eh?
He'll be one of the guys that calls for the helo (and fixed-wing) gunships to haul ass in to blast the bad guys off the planet. Before he goes over, he has to go back to Ft. Sill, OK for close air support school; about two weeks. He's a Forward Observer in the Arty, but hasn't had a lot of air-support stuff.
My older son was a heavy (as in 300+ pounds, even) drinker in college but has since quit entirely. It's funny how things turn out. Perhaps a family has a lot to do with it...
By the way, I've tried Dos Equis and was no impressed. What was good was the sampler at the Valley Forge Brewery in (or near) Malvern, PA.

ps: Steve - what will we be drinking at New Holstein this year? Besides Wilbur's margaritas, that is.

Fun question Alex!
The best beer in the world at this time is Carlsberg, of course (have to say that for patriotic reasons).
However, a couple of summers ago we had some Alaskan Red Ale (I think it was called) in Winthrop, WA. That was really good beer! A shame we can't buy it in this country.

Sam Smith makes some mighty tasty suds over there at the Tadcaster brewery; I like the Oatmeal Stout and the Nut Brown Ale (which my favorite girlfriend has dubbed "Butt Drowned Ale"). It costs too damn much, though.
I recently discovered malt extract brewing and have been making my own. It's really amazing how good it tastes and how easy it is. The hardest part is getting (and keeping) everything clean. Bottling is a pain in the rear, but it's a good way to spend a stormy evening. That, and when you're done, you have five or six gallons of tasty beer that you need help consuming before it reaches it's expiration date!

In 1967 During the VietNam war, as new recruit. I seen several things of interest. A can of Coke was 5 cents but what was more suprising was the old lifers were often passed out at the table with 15 or more cans of beer called BLACK LABEL It was free ! So even free to a young recruit it was bad brew. My best beer is one thats in a Ice Cold glass on a hot day, the first one Just dissapears.

BAck in the 1970s they had an Alaskan beer that was not so great. Prinze Brau or something like that.
They went belly up real fast. I wish I would not have drank the case I took to college. I bet it would be worth a fortune as a collector item.

She calls it that because she tipped over while landing the canoe and sat in the creek. She claims that the fault lay squarely on me since she doesn't drink. I quoted Admiralty Law stating that she was the Captain, since I wasn't aboard at the time, but conceded that I may share a small amount of blame. My duty at the time of the incident was to enhance the vessel's natural, well-known lack of transverse stability by latching onto it while she disembarked. I considered the task and and applied suitable bracing force and felt that I could handle the task easily with one hand, thus maintaining my grasp of the above-mentioned Butt Drowned Ale. But, I misjudged metacenters, bouyancy, righting moments and the like, and then she simply displayed an amazing lack of balance and grace while standing up. Who stands up in a canoe? Fortunately, no beer spillage occured but some high-speed taxiing through the campsite was observed by several bystanders . . . naturally, I'm faster, and escaped serious injury.

The first thing you need to do is buy a Joe Lucas fridge, or just unplug a regular one.
IMHO the best beer, is Ale, and the best of these come from the following UK breweries:
Adnams
Sheperds Neam
Caledonian
Fullers
Courage
Ruddles
Theakstones
Timothy Taylors
Actually any of the real ale brewers are a safe bet.
I seem to remember from visits to the US some Sam Adams and Anchor Steam being rather nice, and I did have a heavy sesion with Killians Red, but I can't remember much about it. All of the micro brewery stuff I've tried in the US have been excellent.
Some cheap and nasty beers are still way better than the likes of Bud, which I really don't like.

All my beers are ales- no lagers. I mostly brew APAs, IPAs, double IPAs and some Scottish and brown ales. In the colder months I usually have a batch or two of "Tundra Tire Stout" handy as well. "Fuel Cache APA" and "Stick and Rudder Double IPA" are my two favorites to brew.

I have to put in another vote for Yuengling...wish I could get it west of the mississippi. Since I cant, I go for Sam adams for a "sipping" beer, and Miller Lite for a drink all day beer.
Hey since so many of us cannot get our favorite beers, why dont we start a "swap system", a beer exchange program!! Whenever you fly out of state, pack a case of your states specialty and swap with someone where you land!! Be sure to pick up an addtional case of the specialty where ever you go to bring home to your hanger homies. That way in addition to our $100 hamburgers we could have our $100 cases of beer and then more reasons to fly....gota make a beer swap-hop!! What do you think?

I'm too young to have partaken of a "33" during the '60's and '70's. HOWEVER, in my numerous, more recent visits to Vietnam, I have had many of the local "333" and occasionally drink a "33" Export with dinner in Vietnamese resturants here in the US.
I have seen the immediate reactions and back peddeling when I have offered a "33" to former Veitnam Vets. It took a suprising (to me) amount of persuading to get them to take the first sip due to bad memories, but once they tasted it, they agreed it was a pretty darn good beer! Not what they remembered.
Tiger beer from Singapore is also pretty darn good beer, but hard to get here.

Jerry I have to disagree - Kona is in Hawaii which is America - the plantations I buy from are run by white (haole) guys (some descendants of German immigrants I think) and a lot of native Hawaiians - I haven't run into a Japanese (immigrant) owned plantation yet but I guess there could be some. Incidentally, the descendants of Chinese immigrants are the predominant business group on the islands although they are being rapidly replaced by Korean immigrants. Descendants of Japanese immigrants are actually a relatively smaller group in the ethnic mix of Hawaii - very visible - because of the service of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team in WWII and Senator Inouye - but smaller. Most of the Japanese you run into in the islands these days are tourists. For my money - Hawaii is as American as my Dutch, German, Brit, Scot immigrant butt is....

Well, thanks for the current report -- but with so many other beers to be tried and savored . . . . You know how it is,
"So many beers, so little time" and, of course, "The worst I ever had was wonderful!" (except '33'). :D
This thread reminds me of the song "Beer Run" on Garth Brooks' album "Scarecrow".
Anyone know that song?

POLAR! I havent thought about that beer in about 10 yrs. [use to fly to Caracus] I have to say the only bigger headache out there is from Sapporo in Japan. They both use formaldehyde for the preservative. I do like the tiny cans that Polar comes in along with the bear on the side.
One of the first trips to CCS I woke up that afternoon and my buddy is out at his poolside veranda with a smile and a polar in his hand. When I got close enough to see what he was smiling about the entire patio was covered in Polar cans...one big gulp and one of em is gone. [might also have been some of the Lufthansa crew in the pool topless, can t remember]

Umm, just a note on ethnomusicology, I believe Garth lifted "B double E-double R -U-N one from Todd Snyder. Great anthem, though.
Steve, you're our resident musicologist here, any thoughts?
Thanks. cubscout

Right you are. I don't remember Garth Brooks' version, but I don't care for Garth Brooks.

StewartB, eeeyup, that's the one, sorry mis-spelled Todd's surname.
Lyrics accurate; and of course 'the road goes on forever and the party never ends' line is an homage to Robert Earl Keen....
Beer Run is also on a licenced compilation from Oskar Blue's brewery in Lyons, CO, a.k.a. the "Dales Pale Ale Singing 12 Pack." I usually like IPA's, but Dale's is a bit over the top on hops for my taste though. Wish they'd do an amber.

Now SJ will back up my story that here in the Noreast 48 we like an ale made in Skowhegan, Maine called "Door Yard Ale". However after two or three growlers of the stuff you wake up like a pig and we end up calling it "Barn Yard Ale"..... May need to bring a case of 6 Growlers to Finleyville and Nolstein this year for some taste tests. John

Doppel Kirsch is my companion as I read this thread... Love it! (both).
I usually keep 7-8 different types of beer 3-4 different soda’s and some premium single malt scotch and brandy in the hanger. The beers below have all been in my cooler at least once in the last 6 months.
Newcastle
Petes Strawberry Blond and Pete’s Wicked Winter Brew
St. Paulie’s and St. Paulie’s dark
Becks, Becks dark, and Becks Octoberfest
Warsteiner and Warsteiner dark
Sam Adams, Sam Adams Octoberfest, and 3-4 different varieties of Sam’s
Paulaner and Paulaner Octoberfest
Pilsner Urquell
Stella Artois
Labatts Blue
Guinness
Sapporo
I took a lot of grief initially for all the different types of beer in the fridge and burned through a number of cases of Labatts. However… The last time I bought a case was 5 months ago and I’ll bet I still have 20 of them. These days I seem to go through more Stella Artois than anything else. :cheers

I'll usually hold out for a Sam Adams Boston Lager or Boston Ale.
Other good ones are Schells Pale Ale and Winter Ale, Summit Grand and Extra Pale Ale, or, for a dessert beer, Hair of the Dog.
The wife like Moose Drool or Newcastle Brown ale. It took a trip to Germany to get her away from the Miller lite. The gal across the street attempts to serve us Blatz lite so, we bring a six of our own & she usually ends up drinking that.
Cheers
Wayne
