Wheel Axles

Folks

Have a PA-18-150 here we are rebuilding and have started looking at the wheel assembly.

I noticed that the Wheels were quite a lose fit on the axles so Ok, new bushes required.

Having a good look at the axle I noticed the folowing:

Axle Wall appeared quite thin
Axle appeared to have been turned as there appeared to be a gap between the Axle itself and the Tube on the Gear Leg the Axle sits in place
The Axle was Rosette Welded into the Tube on the Gear Leg

Questions if anyone can help:

1. DOes anyone know the correct OD for the Axle
2. Is the Axle supposed to be Rosette Welded to the Landing Gear Leg
3. What min tolerance of wall thickness on the axle would be acceptable/wise
4. Can we make our own axles or are there any STC's for them
5. Is the Axle supposed to be pressed fitted into the landing gear or does it rely on the Rossette weld

Thanks
