I need some help from the group on this one. My wife and I are finally taking our honeymoon after 16 years of putting it off. We plan on going once I return, during March or April. She has expressed a desire to have something aviation-related to do during it, and I know she'd like to transition to tailwheel. We'd originally planned to go to Tybee Island, outside of Savannah, so does anyone know of a place near there where she could do the transition?

If not, is there somewhere near you that has both tailwheel transition and a quiet, romantic location? I doubt that most couples plan this way, but we aren't most couples by any means.

Thanks for the help.

Drew,
What a great way to spend your honeymoon, even if it is a little late. If your first location doesn't work, you might want to look at the hotel on the airport at Fredericksburg, TX (http://www.hangarhotel.com/). I searched AOPA's airport information and it shows that someone does tailwheel training at Fredericksburg.

You could always run down the coast to St. Augustine. Of course, then you would have to decide whether to get the endorsement or a couple of hours with Patty Wagstaff in an Extra.

You could also look at Dog Island, Florida (FA43 formerly X39). they have a private airport and some nice quiet hotels (not big hotels think small island) right on the beach. The weather might be a little cool this time of year though and I really know nothing about the romantic factor out there. However I do know that it is a quiet place on a small island. A short flight north across the bay (if you can really call it that) is Wakulla County Airport (2J0) a great little grass strip by the water where a guy with a j-3 85hp cub gives tailwheel instruction. If you want any more information I can give you contact info on the guy down there.

Drew,

If all else fails come to Kansas City, I'll give the TW instruction and you can stay at the motel 6 and eat BBQ... 8)

Thanks for the suggestions so far. I will research them and look into each one. Steve, the Motel 6 sounds REALLY attractive, though Kansas City is home of her psychotic college room-mate who makes bad life choices, who will feel insulted if we go there and don't "look her up" translated as, come live with her for that time.

KC would just require a little more deception planning, and I'm not too sure it's "away" enough for Ellen. As much as I'd like her to get instruction from someone I'm already familiar with.

Thanks for all the help, any and all suggestions are helpful.

Hi Drew, weather in new england that time of year can be dodgy, anyway I've been doing my tailwheel transition at hampton airfield in NH in a J3. They also have a stearman and if you really want to go nuts they do type ratings in a DC3 at $900 an hour. Hampton is on the NH coast about an hours drive from Boston. The Maine seacoast and the ME/NH lakes region are all within an hour or two drive. Again the weather might be really bad that time of year.

Sounds like you got a good one. That time of year, if you want the best odds for good flying weather, I would look for something in the southwest. Arizona, southern New Mexico or south Texas. Joe

Well, the verdict is back. After due consideration, Ellen has decided to forgo any type of flight training while we're "honeymooning". Instead, she has decided that long walks, a visit to the "Mighty Eighth" Air Force museum, and long mornings in bed are a much better idea for our honeymoon.

Though she really wants to go to KC and fly with Steve. We'll just have to plan that separately from the honeymoon.

Thanks for all your input, anyway. I researched all the suggestions and they all seemed really neat. It just gives us more ideas of where to go and what to do, later.
