WHY IS THIS EVENT LIMITED TO 80 AIRCRAFT?

  • It is no secret that the reason the Division of Aeronuatics has asked us to limit the number of aircraft at this event is the number of incidents and accidents in recent years at several large Johnson Creek Fly Ins. The importance of following published procedures and practices diligently and a mindset of safety cannot be overstated. We want to send the message to the Division of Aeronuatics that we are a capable and responsible group that can be entrusted to hold future events, such as this one, which may in turn lead to someday easing the size restriction. You will find important links below that your reading can help keep this event a safe one!

RESPECT FOR SENSITIVE AREAS

  • There are, at my rough count, around seventy-four airstrips in Idaho - many just a short hop from Johnson Creek. Of those seventy-four, there are four that we have been specifically requested to avoid. These are not on the sectional chart in any form. These strips are Dewey Moore, Mile Hi, Simonds, and Vines (often referred to as the Big Creek Four). I had a conversation with Anthony Botello, who is the US Forest Service District Ranger for the area these strips are located in. Anthony said that the USFS is very proud of the airstrips they have in Idaho, but that the management plan that he is charged to follow says these strips are not open, and further that they are not maintained and are dangerous to aviation operations. He went on to say that it was possible the USFS would put X's or E's on these runways and that anyone found there might risk enforcement action. Based on this information, we would strongly encourage you to avoid these airstrips during your time in Idaho and instead point your nose toward one of the seventy other options.

THINGS YOU NEED TO READ BEFORE YOU HEAD TO IDAHO *

Familiarizing yourself with all of the information below will help make this a fun and safe event for everyone! Please take the time to do so! Just becuase you have been going to Idaho for years does not mean you have all the current info. It's worth a refresh!

  • The Idaho Transportation Department Division of Aeronuatics has a great website with operating procedures for Johnson Creek (and other State airports). At a MINIMUM please read this Operating Proceedure for the Johnson Creek Airport

  • The Idaho Aviation Association website has detailed information including operating procedures, pilot reports, pictures, and webcam links for nearly all Idaho airstrips on their Idaho Airstrip Network page. There is also an excellent Airstrip Classification Index which is well worth your time to review.

  • We would strongly encourage you to read and follow The Recreational Aviation Foundation Code of Conduct for operating safely and respectfully while in the backcountry. We all want to be good stewards of these resources.

* There may be a test..
